Ghana Healthcare Program

Health insurance for cocoa farmers in Ghana

From our sustainability vision, we not only think it's important that cocoa is grown sustainably and farmers get a fair price. We are also committed to improving the living standards of our cocoa farmers. That's why we will be a partner of the Ghana Healthcare Program starting in March 2022. It is a partnership with the Swiss chocolate producer Felchlin and the German-based NGO Elucid Social

Based on the idea that health care should be accessible and affordable for everyone, we have joined the Ghana Healthcare Program. Within this program, we pay for health insurance for cocoa farmers and their families from the village of Nankese. This village is located in Ghana's first organic cocoa region, namely Suhum and consists of 159 inhabitants.

Coverage Ghana Health Care Program

The Ghana Healthcare Program is a pioneering program that provides a total of 5,000 cocoa farmers from Ghana's Suhum cocoa region with health insurance. Ghana has had basic health insurance through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) since 2003, but because many health care costs are not fully reimbursed, the percentage of the population who join is low. In that case, healthcare costs are at their own expense, which weighs heavily on a cocoa farmer's income.

The Ghana Healthcare Program combines joining the national basic health insurance with private health insurance. Emergency care, maternity care and minor operations are covered by the national basic health insurance. Expensive operations, such as heart surgery or medication against HIV or malaria are not covered by this basic insurance. The private health insurance organized by Elucid Social does cover this care. In some cases a small co-payment is required, but in general the Ghana Healthcare Program reimburses 80-100% of the healthcare costs of a cocoa farmer or family member.

Elucid Social implements

Ghana Health Care Program

Elucid Social is an NGO based in the German capital of Berlin. They implement Healthcare Programs worldwide based on the idea that everyone should have access to essential healthcare. In many countries where commodities such as coffee, cocoa or rubber are grown, access to healthcare is not always the most normal thing in the world. Often healthcare costs have to be paid out of pocket, which weighs on maintaining a livable income.

Elucid Social is working with various social partners worldwide to improve the living conditions of cocoa farmers and others. Through Elucid Social's digital platform, health insurance paid by Cru de Cacao can be securely and directly transferred to the health insurance fund. Through the cell phones made available, farmers can easily claim their doctor or hospital bills and also have a digital proof of insurance immediately.

Furthermore, Elucid Social is available to the cocoa farmers of the Suhum area 24/7. In case of an emergency, such as a snake bite, Elucid Social ensures that emergency care is on site as soon as possible.

Yayra Glover Cooperative in Ghana

In the Suhum region of Ghana, we work with the Yayra Glover cooperative. Yayra Glover is a pioneer in Ghanaian organic farming and was the first person in Ghana to establish a direct connection (Direct trade) between farmers in the Suhum region and the Swiss chocolate producer Felchlin. It has taken a total of 16 years to ensure that all cocoa from this region is certified organic.

Yayra Glover believes that organic cocoa farming and the implementation of climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture is essential to combat the effects of climate change in Ghana and Africa. This is necessary to secure the income from cocoa farming for future generations as well.
