How is vegan chocolate made?
Vegan chocolate is basically made in the same way as non-vegan chocolate. The big difference is that vegan chocolate does not use any animal ingredients. Milk and white chocolate contains milk powder so it does not fit into a vegan or dairy-free diet. In contrast, our vegan milk and vegan white chocolate consists only of plant-based ingredients.
Vegan chocolate largely follows the same stages in the production process as non-vegan chocolate. From roasting the cocoa beans to adding ingredients to qualify as chocolate. For our vegan milk and vegan white chocolate, organic certified cocoa butter from the Dominican Republic is used. In addition, cane sugar and rice syrup are added to sweeten the vegan chocolate. Finally, hazelnuts are added to the cocoa mass for a little more body. And grated coconut is added to the vegan white chocolate for a milky touch.
Is cocoa butter vegan?
The basic ingredient of any chocolate is cocoa butter. The percentage of cocoa butter determines whether it is dark, milk or white chocolate. As a vegan, you might wonder if cocoa butter is vegetable. The short answer to that is: yes. Cocoa butter is completely vegetable. Cocoa butter is created by first grinding roasted cocoa beans and then pressing them. The fatty substance that remains is somewhat like cream butter. Hence, it is called cocoa butter. By the way, cocoa butter liquefies around the same temperature as cream butter. In this way, cocoa butter can easily be mixed with the other ingredients that make it vegan chocolate.
